Pop Tabs for a Cause

April 25, 2013     (from the WRDSB website)

When Sydney, a grade 3 student at J.W. Gerth PS in Kitchener, found out that you can collect pop tabs to buy a wheelchair to a person in need, she was determined to make it happen. She came to school and enlisted the help of her classmates, Thayden, Hannah, Lauren and Mya and together, they started a school campaign to collect 35,000 pop tabs- enough to buy a wheelchair.

Their campaign became the school’s Christmas charity drive, and within the week they had collected 9000 tabs! The tabs were placed in a large water jug so everyone could see how many they had collected. The campaign has continued throughout the school year, and the students have reached their goal! Over 35,000 pop tabs have been collected so far, and the donations keep coming!

The tabs on pop cans are collected instead of the cans, due to the high content of aluminium in the tabs, and no paint needs to be removed before they are melted.

Congratulations to Sydney and her team for organizing such a successful campaign!
